Bitcoin Rebounds Above $80,000 as Altcoins Slide and Zcash NU7 Raises Holder Concerns

Bitcoin briefly slipped to about $79, 100 before climbing back above $80, 000, while several altcoins posted steep weekly losses. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw heavy withdrawals late in the period, though the reported five-day total remained positive. The published flow figures do not quite add up.

  • Bitcoin was reported near $80, 312, down 1.95% over seven days.
  • CoinGlass data cited by crypto.news showed about $546.88 million in liquidations over 24 hours.
  • Late-week ETF outflows followed three sessions of inflows; the reported five-day net was positive.
  • Bitway, Rain and Hedera were among the tokens with double-digit weekly losses.
  • Zcash’s NU7 upgrade includes shorter target block spacing and changes affecting legacy Sprout funds.

Timeframe note: The market report covers October 22-25 and mentions a possible November 5 Zcash upgrade date, but does not specify the year. The prices and returns below are a historical snapshot, not live market data. The available information does not confirm the November 5 activation date.

Bitcoin recovered, but the reported levels are a market snapshot

Bitcoin started the period struggling to break above $83, 000, then briefly climbed toward $85, 000. It fell back below $83, 000 and $81, 000, touching approximately $79, 100 before recovering above $80, 000. In its October 25 snapshot, crypto.news put BTC near $80, 312, down 1.95% over seven days.

The same snapshot put Bitcoin’s market capitalization near $1.61 trillion and daily trading volume at around $19.2 billion. These figures come from an undated market report and should not be read as current prices.

The drop below $80, 000 coincided with a sharp increase in forced position closures. Crypto.news cited CoinGlass data showing approximately $546.88 million in liquidations over 24 hours, affecting more than 116, 000 traders. A liquidation happens when an exchange closes a leveraged position because the trader no longer has enough margin to support it. Liquidations can deepen a decline, but the figure alone does not show what triggered the selling or how much liquidations contributed.

Bitcoin later rebounded toward $80, 900 before facing more selling. Crypto.news identified $82, 368 as the 20-day simple moving average in its technical assessment. If BTC moved above that level, $84, 725 could come into focus. The assessment put possible support near $78, 000 if Bitcoin fell below $80, 000.

These are scenarios from the report’s technical analysis, not firm price floors or forecasts. A 20-day simple moving average is the average price over the previous 20 days. It can help describe a trend, but it cannot tell traders whether a price will hold or break through a level.

ETF flows were mixed, and the figures do not quite add up

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs reportedly saw outflows of about $635.6 million on October 22 and $137.9 million on October 23. The withdrawals followed three consecutive sessions of inflows that crypto.news said totaled $1.07 billion.

Farside Investors’ figures, as cited by crypto.news, put net inflows across the five trading days at approximately $301.2 million. But the rounded totals given for the three inflow days and two outflow days imply net inflows of about $296.5 million. The reported figures do not explain the difference, so the five-day total should be treated with that caveat.

ETF flows track money entering or leaving specific funds. They do not capture all institutional Bitcoin activity. Even verified flows would not, on their own, explain why investors traded or predict BTC’s next move.

Crypto.news also cited a Glassnode assessment that put the estimated average cost basis of U.S. spot ETF holdings and corporate Bitcoin treasuries at around $80, 000-$81, 500. A cost basis is the estimated price at which holdings were acquired. That range may help describe the market’s positioning, but it does not prove investors bought at those prices or mean the range will act as support.

Double-digit losses were concentrated in a subset of tokens

Among the tokens in crypto.news’s weekly market figures, Bitway (BTW) had the largest reported decline, falling 29.31% to approximately $1.72. Rain (RAIN) dropped 13.89% to near $0.0081, while Hedera (HBAR) fell 13.47% to $0.0767.

Other listed decliners included Morpho (MORPHO), down 13.06%; Aave (AAVE), down 11.65% to about $136; Avalanche (AVAX), down 9.68% to $8.83; and NEAR Protocol, down 9.42% to $4.45. Quant lost 8.09%, Bittensor 7.26%, and Polkadot 7.21% to around $1.03.

The picture among larger assets was more mixed. Ethereum traded near $2, 332, down 3.41% for the week and below $2, 400. Solana was at $100.93, down 2.81%; Cardano stood at $0.2042, down 7.17%; and Chainlink was near $11.37, down 5.27%. XRP was around $1.30, down 0.09%, while BNB gained 2.24% to $737.12.

Some tokens rose despite the broader weakness. Pepe (PEPE) gained 14.15% to around $0.0000044, with a reported market capitalization near $1.86 billion and daily trading volume above $330 million. MemeCore (M) rose 19.4% over the week to approximately $0.92, despite a daily decline approaching 20%. Monero (XMR) gained 3.82% to near $605.

Zcash (ZEC) was reported up 7.51% for the week, reaching approximately $1, 209. The gain came as preparations continued for the NU7 upgrade, but the available information does not show that the upgrade caused the price rise. The market report described Zcash as a top-10 cryptocurrency by market capitalization, but gave no ranking or supporting data. That claim is not independently established here.

Zcash NU7 changes more than block timing

The Zcash Foundation describes NU7 as a set of planned protocol changes, not just a speed upgrade. Its release says target block spacing will drop from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. The Foundation projects that the average wait for a first confirmation will be about three times shorter. Shorter target spacing does not guarantee that every transaction will confirm three times faster or establish finality.

The Foundation also says NU7 will increase Orchard shielded-transaction throughput from 2.9 to 6.6 transactions per second. It presents this as increased capacity, not a measured result across live network conditions. The release also says the changes will cut by about 37% the worst-case synchronization bandwidth a spammer could impose on light wallets.

NU7 also changes how fees are handled. Under the Foundation’s description, 60% of each block’s transaction fees will be removed from circulation and placed in a reserve, while miners keep the other 40%. The release says a later change will reissue a small, predictable portion of that reserve alongside the normal block reward. It also says the four-year halving schedule and 21 million ZEC supply cap will remain unchanged.

One change directly affects some holders: after activation, version 4 transactions will no longer be valid. The Foundation says Sprout transfers can only use version 4, so funds remaining in the Sprout pool will become unspendable. Holders who may be affected should check current guidance from the Zcash Foundation and their wallet provider well before activation.

The Foundation’s release gives a mainnet activation block height of 3, 543, 405, but the available details do not confirm a November 5 calendar date. Without a year and a dated activation announcement, that date should not be treated as settled.

Key questions and answers

  • How low did Bitcoin fall?

    Crypto.news reported a low of approximately $79, 100 before Bitcoin recovered above $80, 000.

  • Were spot Bitcoin ETF flows negative across the five-day period?

No. The reported total was positive, though the rounded daily figures do not reconcile exactly with the stated $301.2 million net inflow.

  • Which listed token had the steepest weekly loss?

Bitway (BTW), down 29.31% in the market figures reported by crypto.news.

  • Did the NU7 upgrade cause Zcash’s price gain?

That has not been established. The reported gain and upgrade preparations coincided, but timing alone does not prove causation.

  • What should some Zcash holders know about NU7?

The Foundation says Sprout funds will become unspendable after activation because Sprout transfers rely on version 4 transactions, which NU7 will invalidate. Affected holders should check current migration guidance from Zcash and their wallet provider.
