Ripple CEO Bradley Garlinghouse says RLUSD is meant to compete with other stablecoins, not XRP. But more activity on the XRP Ledger would not, on its own, show that demand for XRP is growing. And a chart pattern flagged by trader Ali Charts does not guarantee another rally.
- Ripple describes RLUSD as complementary to XRP, though their uses could overlap.
- More XRPL activity does not automatically increase demand for XRP.
- Ali Charts pointed to a past 71% rally after a Bollinger Band squeeze, but the pattern does not predict a repeat.
- Reported XRP prices of $1.28 and $1.16 have no dates, complicating the $2.19 estimate.
RLUSD and XRP are different assets, but their uses may overlap
RLUSD is a stablecoin, a cryptocurrency designed to hold a relatively steady value against a reference asset. XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native digital asset. Ripple CEO Bradley Garlinghouse has described RLUSD as a way to support activity on the ledger, not replace XRP.
“RLUSD isn’t competing with XRP. It’s competing with other stablecoins. Use case matters, and I want those use cases running on the XRPL, ” Garlinghouse said.
That is Ripple’s position, but it does not prove the two assets can never compete. Stablecoins and XRP have different roles, though their uses could overlap in some payment or settlement situations. RLUSD is also available on multiple blockchains, so its presence on XRPL does not make it exclusive to that network.
Ripple hopes RLUSD-powered applications will bring more businesses, developers, and institutional users to XRPL. That is an ambition, not a proven result. Even if activity on the ledger grows, the effect on XRP will depend on whether those applications give people a reason to acquire or use the token.
More XRPL activity does not automatically mean more XRP demand
XRP community researcher WrathofKahneman argues that RLUSD could benefit XRP by adding liquidity to XRPL.
“RLUSD is great for XRP. More XRPL liquidity makes XRP easier to use in the long run & it isn’t replacing XRP where it wasn’t used, ” WrathofKahneman wrote.
Liquidity is how easily an asset can be bought, sold, or used in a transaction. But more RLUSD on XRPL does not automatically mean more liquidity in XRP markets. That link depends on whether RLUSD activity improves a trading pair, payment route, or another use involving XRP.
WrathofKahneman acknowledged the gap between network activity and token demand:
“The problem is that w/out direct use, price impact is 2nd order, ” WrathofKahneman said.
Any price benefit could be indirect if RLUSD applications do not require XRP. Whether those applications will create direct demand for the token remains an open question.
A Bollinger Band squeeze is not a price forecast
Separately, trader Ali Charts highlighted a tight Bollinger Band pattern on XRP’s four-hour chart, followed by a move above the upper band. Bollinger Bands are a technical-analysis indicator built around a moving average. The outer bands reflect price volatility. When the bands contract, traders call it a squeeze. Volatility has narrowed, but the pattern alone does not show whether the next major move will be up or down.
Ali Charts said a similar compression in the past came before a rise of nearly 71% in three days. The current bands were described as the tightest since August, but no year was given. The date of the earlier squeeze and rally was also left out, making it hard to judge how closely the market conditions compare.
The chart setup is separate from the question of RLUSD adoption. A potential breakout does not show that RLUSD is creating demand for XRP. Likewise, more XRPL activity would not confirm a technical signal.
The reported prices add another wrinkle. Coverage puts XRP at around $1.28 in its adoption discussion and around $1.16 in its technical-analysis section, without dates to explain the difference. It also estimates that a repeat of the 71% rise from $1.16 would take XRP to about $2.19. The math does not add up: a 71% gain from $1.16 is roughly $1.98. Without dated price snapshots, neither figure should be treated as a confirmed current price or a reliable target.
Key questions about RLUSD and XRP
-
Is RLUSD intended to replace XRP?
No. Garlinghouse says Ripple positions RLUSD against other stablecoins, though the assets’ uses could overlap in some situations.
-
Could RLUSD benefit XRP?
Possibly, if RLUSD activity improves liquidity in markets or routes involving XRP. More XRPL activity alone does not establish direct demand for XRP. Mastercard’s test of RLUSD for faster card settlements is one example of an application that could add activity to the ledger.
-
Does the Bollinger Band pattern guarantee another 71% rally?
No. It describes a past pattern, and a squeeze does not determine the direction or size of a future move. Binance’s XRPL integration is another development to consider, but it does not guarantee a price recovery.
-
Does a 71% gain from $1.16 equal $2.19?
No. It would put XRP at about $1.98. The reported $2.19 estimate does not match the stated $1.16 starting price.
RLUSD could expand activity on XRPL. Whether that activity creates meaningful demand for XRP is a separate question, and the answer depends on how the applications actually use the token.
