The typical smallest atomic unit in Solana is the lamport, equivalent to a satoshi on BTC or wei on ETH. Solana has chosen to go with 1 SOL consisting of 10^9 lamports — 9 decimal places, putting it slightly more precise than Bitcoin style denominations, but not as extreme as Ethereum style. However there is another unit which is used within the blockchain internally, the micro-lamport, which pushes the true divisibility of SOL to 10^15 units. A micro-lamport becomes relevant only for smart contracts when being charged gas fees for transactions.
